Behind the Covers: A Conversation About Early Literacy, Digital Learning, and the Modern Library

What makes screen time meaningful for young learners, and how can libraries help children build both traditional literacy and real digital skills?

AWE Learning President Owen Brittan recently joined Dakota County Library’s Behind the Covers podcast to discuss the role of intentional educational technology in today’s libraries. During the conversation, Owen and the hosts talked about how AWE Learning workstations provide children with a safe, structured environment for active learning. AWE Workstations do not have open internet access, advertisements, logins, or distracting content.

The episode explores the difference between passive screen time and purposeful digital learning, including how touchscreen, mouse, and keyboard interaction can help children develop literacy, problem-solving, fine motor, navigation, and early computer skills. Owen also discusses the importance of self-paced, predictable learning experiences for neurodivergent and multilingual learners and the evolving role of libraries as trusted community spaces for both traditional and digital literacy, as well as future-readiness.
